Thailand Visa for Sri Lankans : Sri Lankan tourists planning a trip to Thailand need to prepare for an important change. From 15 September 2026, holders of ordinary Sri Lankan passports will no longer qualify for Thailand’s general visa-exemption scheme and must obtain a visa before travelling.

The change replaces the temporary system introduced in July 2024, which allowed Sri Lankan visitors to enter Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days.
Travellers arriving on or before 14 September 2026 can still be admitted under the existing rules and keep the period granted by immigration on arrival.
What changes for Sri Lankan tourists on 15 September 2026?
Thailand’s revised entry framework reduces the main visa-exemption list to 60 countries and territories, generally allowing eligible visitors stays of up to 30 days. Sri Lanka is not included on that new list.
This means Sri Lankan ordinary-passport holders arriving from 15 September must have the correct Thai visa approved before departure. Travellers should not assume they can apply for a Visa on Arrival, as the new Visa on Arrival list covers only Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia.
The change is based on the traveller’s date of entry, not the date a flight or hotel was booked. Anyone with travel planned around the changeover should check the date carefully and confirm their requirements before going to the airport.
How Sri Lankan travellers can apply for a Thai visa

The Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo says applicants who require a visa must submit their application through the official Thai e-Visa website. The embassy no longer accepts standard visa applications in person.
For Sri Lankan passport holders applying for a tourist visa, the stated processing time is three to seven working days after all required documents have been completed and submitted. Extra documents or an interview may be requested in individual cases, so leaving the application until the last minute could put a trip at risk.
Applicants should follow the current instructions shown by the official e-Visa system and the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo. Supporting documents, fees and processing requirements can change, and approval should be received before travel.
What travellers should do before departure

Sri Lankan visitors travelling on or after 15 September 2026 should:
- apply through the official Thai e-Visa platform well before departure;
- check that the visa is approved before travelling to the airport;
- make sure the passport and booking details match the application;
- carry the visa confirmation and supporting travel documents;
- complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within the required period before arrival; and
- recheck official embassy guidance shortly before flying.
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is separate from a visa. Completing the TDAC does not give permission to enter Thailand, so Sri Lankan travellers will need both the correct visa and the required arrival card.
The practical message is simple: visa-free travel is ending for Sri Lankan ordinary-passport holders, but holidays to Thailand remain possible with advance planning. Apply early, use official websites and avoid relying on old travel advice that still refers to the previous 60-day exemption.
Travel rules can change at short notice, and entry is always subject to the decision of Thai immigration authorities. Check the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo and Thailand’s official e-Visa platform before booking or travelling.
